As a designer of decorative rugs, I look far and wide for inspiration. In yesterday's post the inspiration was nature and I posted pictures I took this spring and fall in Boston's Arnold Arboretum. Today's source of inspiration is women's fashion. I looks for sudden and drastic shifts in moods in women's fashion. They are usually an early trend forecaster of decorative rug fashions in the coming years.

This week I have been enjoying our annual family summer vacation in Maine where the misty pine covered islands completely draw me in to nature. In July and August we desire restful sleep in bedrooms that let in cool breezes and the fragrances from the garden. The 14 bedrooms in today's post have all these qualities plus incredible style. Every Asmara needlepoint rug starts out as an idea which is translated into a quick pencil sketch which goes through several revisions and discussions between artist Elizabeth Moisan and myself. When a sketch looks promising, Elizabeth mixes colors in Gouache. It usually takes several failed attempts before we get just the right colors. Elizabeth then hand paints the design on poster board. A painting usually goes through several revisions and if we are happy with the final result we send it over to Asmara's needlepoint rug making artists. The pictures tell the story from here.
