How to Add Warmth to Modern Open Spaces with Oushak Rugs

Posted by Abid Ilahi on Apr 29, 2013 11:15:00 PM

Do you love open plan spaces that look modern, feel airy and are bathed in natural light? Would you like these spaces to function equally well for entertaining guests and for cozy times with family? The problem is that unless you infuse some classic elements such as a beautiful Oushak rug into a modern space, the space can feel cold and hard. Most of us want our interiors to look modern and also feel comfortable and cozy. But if we fill a space with modern pieces we will discover that it lacks warmth and softness. The other major problem with an open plan space is that if they are not properly designed they make us feel we if we are adrift in an airport lounge or in the midst of a passageway. When we are enamored by open plan spaces we can overlook that we also have a need for privacy and for places where we can relax with a good book or get together for an intimate family chat. Today's blog post explains the two keys for having it both ways-an open plan space that looks modern and feels intimate and cozy. These two steps will be illustrated by taking a critical look at an open plan space in the current issue of Traditional Home designed by Jamie Herzlinger Interiors.

How Young Paris Designers Decorated Hermes Home with Aubusson Rugs

Posted by Abid Ilahi on Apr 28, 2013 11:21:00 PM

In yesterday's blog post I wrote that it is not desirable to exactly match the colors of the fabrics and the Aubusson rug or with any other kind of decorative rug that you have picked out for the room. So I was very pleased to see that my views are vindicated in the current issue of Elle Decor which has a magnificent French château decorated by young Parisian interior designers Michael Coorengel and Jean-Pierre Calvagrac with fabulous Aubusson rugs. The château is owned by two brothers from the family that owns the French luxury goods house Hermès. This house also breaks another rule that American decorators often follow- the colors of the walls and the fabrics are not faded as we think antique colors should be. Instead the colors are very bright, because, Michael Coorengel told Elle Decor very vibrant colors were used when Versailles was built 300 years ago and the colors we see today are the result of hundreds of years of fading, which we have accepted as the true antique colors. "Back then, Versailles was psychedelic, multicolored, like being in space," he says. "It was the standard for design. Imagine having a palace done by Zaha Hadid. It would have been the same effect, " he told Elle Decor.

How to Decorate: Cowtan & Tout Fabric and Yellow, Blue and Green Rug

Posted by Abid Ilahi on Apr 27, 2013 11:51:00 PM

Cowtan and Tout fabrics include Colefax And Fowler and Jane Churchill fabrics in yellow green, blue, grey and white. When looking for a green rug to pair with these fabrics, avoid the mistake of trying to exactly match the colors in the fabrics. If you do exact color matching the room will look flat and feel lifeless. The 5 tips for decorating with these fabrics and green rugs will guide you in creating beautiful, invigorating rooms that feel inviting in all seasons.

The 5 Most Glamorous Interiors with Bessarabian Rugs

Posted by Abid Ilahi on Apr 26, 2013 10:34:00 PM

The 5 Most Glamorous Interiors with Bessarabian Rugs are by such legendary interior designers  as Stephane Boudin of Maison Jansen, David Easton, Renzo Mongiardino and Albert Hadley. The rooms were designed for celebrities that include Jackie Kennedy, Lee Radziwill, Marella Agnelli and Brooke Astor- a testament to the prestigious associations of Bessarabian rugs which were originally made for Russian royalty in the 19th century. My favorite of these interiors is the living room in Dallas designed by David Easton. This room is a most amazing combination of relaxed comfort and elegance which is a very hard thing to achieve. Bessarabian rugs are becoming increasingly fashionable as evidenced by the latest advertising campaign of Brunschwig & Fils which features their all time greatest rooms including Albert Hadley's red lacquered library for Brooke Astor with its mysterious Bessarabian rug which the The New York Times proclaimed as "one of the most admired interiors of the 20th century."

Jayne Wrightsman, Jackie Kennedy and Savonnerie Carpets at the Met

Posted by Abid Ilahi on Apr 25, 2013 11:12:00 PM

In preparation for setting up my own Savonnerie carpet production in the 1990's I visited the Wrightsman Galleries for French Decorative Arts at the Metropolitan Museum, New York and remember being very impressed when I saw that unlike displays in the museum, the Wrightsman had re-created entire rooms including gilded 18th century boiseries, period furniture, Savonnerie carpets and Sèvres porcelain to show the setting in which these were used. I remember wondering who the Wrightsman's were to have made such extravagant donations and did not hear much about them in the years since until I ran into an article by Francesca Stanfill in Vanity Fair that tells the fascinating rags-to-riches story of Jayne Wrightsman who rose to the pinnacle of New York society starting from humble beginnings. She became one of the greatest benefactors of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and developed a close friendship with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis whom she quietly mentored during the 1961-63 restoration of the White House, letting Jackie take all the credit for the superb work that was done.

Do you love the reassuring comfort of traditional furniture, but dislike stuffy, old fashioned interiors? Do you love a clean modern look but feel contemporary furniture is cold and unromantic? You will be happy to learn that two AD100 interior design greats Bunny Williams and Thad Hayes have figured out how to design clean, airy, modern interiors by using geometric rugs and editing the color palette down to two or three colors. I have reduced their decorating approach to 6 key ideas which you can use to design modern interiors which have the charm, warmth and romance of traditional forms. I will illustrate the 6 ideas with a romantic dining room by Bunny Williams and a blue and white living room by Thad Hayes. Vogue's Great Gatsby Photos Spark Fashion for Blue Oushak Rugs

Posted by Abid Ilahi on Apr 19, 2013 9:07:00 PM

The May 2013 issue of Vogue has gone all out to showcase the fashions of the Roaring Twenties featured in the new movie of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel "The Great Gatsby". To show the ethereal beauty of Miuccia Prada's costumes to the best advantage, Vogue set designer Mary Howard chose a soft blue Oushak rug and beige silk drapes to bring out the splendor of Carey Mulligan's Prada and Chanel costumes. The Vogue Great Gatsby issue is well timed to take advantage of buzz created by the May 10 release of the Baz Luhrmann directed 3D movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire and Joel Edgerton with Jay-Z providing the soundtrack. If you haven't yet caught the "The Great Gatsby" fever, you will soon have plenty of opportunity to do so.

7 Gorgeous Interiors: How David Easton Decorates with Aubusson Rugs

Posted by Abid Ilahi on Apr 17, 2013 3:02:00 PM

If you remove the Aubusson rug from each of the 6 gorgeous interiors by David Easton, these rooms would lose their entire personality. What is even more interesting is that the Aubusson rugs David chose for his rooms would have been rejected by many other decorators. For example, many decorators reject Aubusson rugs with prominent central medallions, saying it is too hard to arrange furniture on such rugs. Other decorators object to Aubusson rugs with floral designs or with French Empire designs. You will see that David Easton relishes all such Aubusson rugs because he knows that they bring sophistication and personality to a room that other rugs cannot. Where others see flaws in an Aubusson rug, David sees gems that will make his rooms memorable. If you are thinking that David was settling for “flawed” Aubusson rugs because he could not find the "perfect" rug, you should now that David had these Aubusson rugs custom made to his exacting specifications.

Resilient Bostonians Are Up And Running Again

Posted by Abid Ilahi on Apr 16, 2013 10:16:00 PM

As I drove to work yesterday, I watched teenagers in bold T shirts cross the street to walk over to Beacon Street to watch the event that symbolizes the coming of spring and when Boston welcomes thousand of runners and their families from all over the world to the oldest Marathon in the world. I promised myself that even though I was going to miss seeing the marathon in person, I would get over to Commonwealth Avenue to see the blooming of pink magnolias that usually coincide with Marathon day.

10 Classic David Easton Interiors with Needlepoint Rugs

Posted by Abid Ilahi on Apr 14, 2013 10:58:00 PM

David Easton masterfully recaptures the elegance of the classic English country house with quintessentially English needlepoint rugs. What is even more fascinating is how David pairs the classical order and symmetry of neoclassical architecture with floral needlepoint rugs and thereby creates a modern rendition of the English Georgian style. David's design approach is continuously evolving as he incorporates changes in technology to create what he calls “an envelope for a lifestyle".

Pinterest's 7 Most Gorgeous Interiors with Luxury Savonnerie Rugs

Posted by Abid Ilahi on Apr 11, 2013 4:04:00 PM

To qualify for Pinterest's 7 Most Gorgeous Interiors with Savonnerie Rugs, the interiors had to be both gorgeous and over the top. I rejected Napolean's bedroom at Malmaison because it was definitely way over the top, but I did not find it beautiful. I am pleased that more than half of the top 7 interiors are by American decorators, and if you did not know which ones are American, it would be hard to tell them apart from the European. As you go through these rooms, pay special attention to the rooms in which the colors of the fabrics and the walls are deliberately not coordianted with colors of the Savonnerie rugs. This freedom from the iron clad rules of color coordination gives these rooms a fresh, airy and timeless feeling. Since the attributions of the images on Pinterest are frequently missing or inaccurate, I apologize in advance for any errors that I might have unknowingly picked up from Pinterest.

In order to learn how to enrich Scalamandre's Kathryn Ireland fabrics with blue rugs, it is important to first learn what not to do. Each year with the onset of summer, home design magazines feature eye catching interiors with blue and white fabrics and blue rugs. What these magazines fail to mention are some major decorating errors in some of these rooms. We will examine the impact of these errors and illustrate how to avoid them when decorating with Scalamandre's Kathryn M. Ireland Duden Lodge fabrics and blue rugs.

How to Glamorize Brunschwig & Fils Ikat Fabrics with Aubusson Rugs

Posted by Abid Ilahi on Apr 3, 2013 10:07:00 PM

Oscar de la Renta was the first fashion designer to introduce Ikat dresses on fashion runways in 2005, and ever since then he has demonstrated his love for Ikats by working directly with Ikat weavers in Uzbeksitan (see video). So when I was looking for confirmation for the idea of pairing Brunschwig & Fils Ikat fabrics with a floral Aubusson rug, I researched de la Renta's Fall 2013 Ready to Wear Collection and was very pleased to find that he had combined geometric and floral Ikat patterns in a fabulous dress. Oscar de la Renta had done exactly what Asmara designer Alexis McDermott did when she paired Brunschwig & Fils geometric Ikat fabrics with a floral Aubusson rug featured in today's post. Geometric Ikat fabrics have a naturalistic and comfortable look that contrasts with the refined curves of a floral Aubusson rug. The combination of two such contrasting looks makes a room feel glamorous and comfortable at the same time. It is the interior design equivalent of wearing blue jeans with a silk top. When this is done well, the result is both chic and comfortable. On the opposite end of the spectrum are rooms that look boring because everything is of the same style and from the same design period. Interior designer Cindy Rinfret calls this type of decorating "embassy style decorating."

How to Enhance Pierre Frey Chinoiserie Fabrics with Green Rugs

Posted by Abid Ilahi on Apr 2, 2013 5:21:00 PM

Green rugs in geometric patterns inspired by Chinoiserie drawings of Jean Pillement are ideal companions for Pierre Frey's Spring 2013 fabrics Les Indes Galantes and Mandchou. The geometric patterned green rugs and Pierre Frey's fabrics are inspired by Chinoiserie drawings of the 17th and 18th centuries when Europe's imagination was fired up by images of the Far East brought back by travelers returning from India and China. A craze for exotic imported luxury goods soon grew so large, it created a desire to make copies of eastern textiles within Europe. Within a short time French artists began painting a fantasy version of the East which had only a tenuous connection to the real China. One of the greatest Chinoiserie artists was Jean Pillement who personally spread the fashion for Chinoiserie through his travels during the 18th century from Paris to Lisbon, Madrid, London, Vienna, Warsaw and St. Petersburg where he worked for royal patrons.
