4.   Select wall and fabric colors from the designer rug’s palette

The paint chips that I have laying here beside me are a collection of the range of colors that are found in the rug and can be used as surrounding fabrics, drapery, and wall color.

The color palette of this Oushak rug is a perfect invitation. Rather than feel like you're going to be locked in by the color palette of the rug, this color palette opens you up for an opportunity to mix colors together that you might not have been comfortable with mixing, and also would have not been able to find grounds for. This rug, then, becomes, not a determining factor, but one that contributes to the combination that you can use in the room.

5.     Create contrast between rug and floor

I feel that often a greater contrast between the rug and the floor is best. It draws attention to the room, and the area that is inside of that rug. The rug itself becomes the dominating factor, and therefore, the determinant in how big the room looks.

6.   Avoid too small a rug as it will “shrink” the room

As a designer, I'm often asked how to determine the size of the rug that should be used in the room. And normally, that question is coming from someone who has either just refinished or put in wood floors, and they hate the idea of covering the stone or wood that they've installed.

The size of the room is defined by the size of the rug. The rug should be large enough so at least the toes of the furniture can sit on the rug. Placing the dining table on the rug does not hide the rug, but actually creates a feeling of welcome. LaSarre Aubusson Rug 5115BK. Photo: Koch Studio

I caution clients and tell them that by making the rug too small, and therefore attempting to show as much of the new floor as they possibly can, they are, rather than enhancing the floor, making the area rug, and therefore the room, look small.

 7.  Pick the sizes of the dining and living room rugs correctly

The best rule of thumb is to make sure that furniture that's placed in the room has at least its toes on the rug.

There is nothing wrong with putting a dining table on top of the rug, or slipping half of it under the bed, as we've done here, because it warms the look of the room; you're not hiding the rug, you're enhancing it by adding furniture to it.
