The Bergamo needlepoint rug in shades of pink, red and white anchors the pattern-on-pattern-mix of fabrics, wallcovering and Chinese Chippendale furniture in the master bedroom. The striped fabric and graphics are Schumacher, the floral fabric is vintage. The green wall is Benjamin Moore's Chamomile. Asian nesting tables were custom-made by Mary McDonald. Mary McDonald said in her interview in House Beautiful: "People have rules about bedrooms, that they're always supposed to be soft and pastel. Why can't they be zippy and vibrant? So I used a lot of goofy pattern. The only room that is remotely pastel is the little girl's room. But in there I added one really bold acid green. Not that pastels can't be glamorous, too".
Mary McDonald shows that to achieve glamour and drama with needlepoint rugs you have to be courageous and break some rules.
Question: Do the decorating rules in Needlepoint Rug, 7 Advanced Decorating Techniques in yesterdays blog post apply to this master bedroom? Were any of the 7 rules broken in designing this room?
