In the 17th century French artists and weavers invented the art of weaving rugs with depth perspective. This technique is so artistically demanding it has never been copied by the rug weavers of the east and even today only European rugs such as Aubusson, Savonnerie and Needlepoints have three dimensional patterns.

Elle Decor's December 2016 issue seems to be predicting a return to richly colored traditional interiors with gorgeous Aubusson rugs as in the 17th-century Manor House in England designed by Laura Ingrams for a young Baron and his family. This trend is carried through to a magical alpine getaway in St. Moritz, Switzerland by Studio Peregalli. Contemporary design is becoming more luxurious as in the Lee Mindel designed Palm Beach oceanfront. I hope you enjoy my pick of Elle Decor's five best in December.

Veranda's 5 Best Rooms with Designer Rugs in November 2016

Posted by Abid Ilahi on Nov 3, 2016 9:41:09 PM

My picks for the five best rooms with designer rugs in Veranda's November 2016 issue include Ann and Gordon Getty's Chinoiserie themed dining room and their Russian Ballet inspired music room in their Pacific Palisades, San Francisco mansion. I was exhilarated by Richard Hallberg's fresh take on a mountain retreat in Aspen and Anthony Baratta's Utah very different view of a ski lodge which he infused with bold quilt and plaid patterns. Finally we remember Atlanta Garden legend Ryan Gainey and his take on Napoleonic style. I hope you enjoy the magnificent variety.

Posted by Kate Watson on May 12, 2016 5:00:00 PM

Aubusson rugs ancient patterns have a timeless appeal. It might surprise you to learn that these rugs are as much at home in a rustic country interior as in a glamorous English country house, a French château or an Italian villa. Aubusson rugs were originally created in the 18th century for the French nobility. The patterns of these rugs are a combination of architectural notifs from classical Greece and Rome and French floral motifs. Aubusson rugs have a flat-woven texture which gives them a clean, almost contemporary look. The seven chic rooms in today's post illustrate several different ways of decorating with Aubusson rugs.

Posted by Abid Ilahi on Oct 28, 2014 11:02:00 AM

The interiors and decorative rugs in Oscar de la Renta’s many homes reflect the same classical elegance as his beautiful dresses cherished by women all over the world and favored by every American first lady from Jacqueline Kennedy to Michelle Obama. Vogue in their tribute to de la Renta, last week, noted that his elegant interiors seemed to be in a constant dialog with his runway fashions. de la Renta had a passion for patterns and colors and his urbane taste ranged from exotic Central Asian silk Ikat to intricate Elizabethan Palempore; from jewel-like Chinoiserie to stately Greek architectural motifs. Today we celebrate de la Renta’s most memorable interiors with decorative rugs.
