Where to Buy Needlepoint Rugs: 9 Top Sources and 17 Decorating Tips

Posted by Abid Ilahi on May 19, 2017 1:35:00 AM

A new generation of interior designers is discovering the allure of needlepoint rugs at a time when these rugs are no longer being made. Most of the needlepoint workshops in China-where 99% of needlepoint rugs were made - have shut down due to skyrocketing wages brought about by rapid industrialization which has drawn workers to higher paying manufacturing jobs. Back in the late 1980's when I first started making needlepoint rugs in China, I was amazed by the quality of the artists and artisans we were able to recruit. These young men and women freshly out of art school possessed unbelievably sensitive eyes for color and design. Now with China no longer making these rugs there are only two specialist importers remaining who have needlepoint rugs because they have retained inventory from before the factories shut down. They are Asmara and Stark Carpet. An additional seven dealers offer antique needlepoint rugs. All 9 top sources of needlepoint rugs are listed at the end of this post. Here are 17 tips for decorating with needlepoint rugs.

6 Rooms Chase Away Winter Blues with Nature's Colors and Green Rugs

Posted by Kate Watson on Nov 28, 2013 8:50:00 PM

With the approach of winter days are shortening and we are getting less exposure to the sun's healing rays. If you have been feeling a bit blue or moody, it is not just your imagination. Doctor's have a name for this physiologial effect, they call it "seasonal affective disorder" or SAD. As an antidote the Brooklyn Botanical Garden is offering nature walks called Chase Away the Winter Blues guided by a BBG veteran who also happens to be a licensed psychotherapist. "Walking the Garden grounds counteracts some of the overindulgence of the holiday season while keeping the blues at bay" advises the BBG. Decorating our homes with nature's colors is another way to invite the beauty and healing effects of nature's colors into our lives. We know that the color green has a cool, earthy feel, like grass under the feet or trees stirring in the breeze. Adding a green rug to any room can help infuse the space with a feeling that is vibrant and alive. The six rooms below all use green rugs to create a vibe that is modern but overwhelmingly fresh and natural.

Red is a thoroughly modern color – bold, unapologetic and hard to miss. It works brilliantly with blacks and white, blends with browns, and adds contrast and flavor to designs dominated by orange or pink. You can use red to create crisp patterns, provide a strong visual anchor or even liven up subtle tonal effects. It’s a can’t-miss color that can work in a surprising number of contexts. How to Design Stylish Zen-Like Spaces with Green Rugs

Posted by Caroline Bell on Aug 8, 2013 10:25:00 AM

If you're trying to create a Zen-inspired space with green rugs, you couldn't have chosen a more appropriate rug color to do so. When creating rooms with Zen design, you should look for neutral, soft colors that inspire a sense of calm.

It's critically important that we create rooms of refuge in our homes. Our homes are supposed to be oases from the outside world, but even the most joyous homes can get hectic on the inside, especially those filled with large families. If that accurately describes your house, set aside one room for yourself. Green rugs, light fabrics and gorgeous textures laid out in your own private "you" space can help you create the tiny bit of paradise you crave. Vivienne Westwood said, "Buy less, choose well." Keep that in mind, as it will help you keep your space beautiful and spare.

Posted by Kate Watson on Jun 21, 2013 3:05:00 PM

Beautiful silk damask fabrics in the Victoria and Albert Museum show that this art developed in ancient Damascus and Byzantium. Modern damask rugs are inspired by ancient damask fabrics but they have fresh, contemporary colors. An artistically colored damask rug can be used to give modern rooms a feeling of sophistication and history. Modern damask rugs are also perfect for bringing youthful energy to traditional decorating. AD100 interior designer David Kleinberg could have been speaking about modern damask rugs when he said, “When you stay relentlessly in one period, the eye absorbs it all in a single glance. Going against period introduces energy.” Damask rugs bring a chic energy to a room because they combine ancient patterns with modern colorations.  Take a look at the stylish energy in the rooms pictured below and learn how damask rugs are the perfect jumping off point for creating chic and invigorating rooms.
