How Needlepoint Rugs are Handmade Using a Painted Needlepoint Canvas

Posted by Abid Ilahi on May 18, 2017 5:59:00 PM

It is hard to imagine that in this day when most things are made by machine a 9'x12' Asmara Needlepoint rug  has 1.5 million individual hand made stitches (1,555,200 to be exact). The only people who are not surprised are needlepoint hobbyists who know how much time it takes to complete just a few inches of petit point (a late 19th century French term meaning ‘little stitch’)let alone a large room size needlepoint rug with millions of stitches and hundreds of colors! Today we pull back the curtain to reveal how needlepoint rugs were made at London's famous Royal School of Needlework and at the Asmara Needlepoint Studio in China.

Today Wilkinson presides over Tony Duquette Studios in Beverly Hills and follows his mentor's decorating philosophy in a 100 acre hilltop retreat in Malibu, California. The 7 best rooms with designer rugs are a homage to "more is more" and includes Wilkinson and Laurie Steichen who has evoked an incredibly authentic 18th-century Italian palazzo on a hilltop in Vista, California.

Architectural Digest's 7 Best Rooms with Designer Rugs in August 2016

Posted by Justin Heitmann on Aug 4, 2016 10:05:04 AM

Designer Sig Bergamin has been on the AD100 list for several years now. You can experience his work all over the world from Paris to New York to Brazil. Our selection of the seven best rooms with designer rugs in the August 2016 Architectural Digest, are all from Sig's work on a Portuguese colonial house located in a historic plantation just outside São Paulo, Brazil. The estate includes horse stables, a royal pool and its own farm chapel. Sig, a master at mixing bold patterns, vivid colors and fabulous oversized rugs is the type of designer Architectural Digest is likely to feature more often under newly installed editor in chief, Amy Astley who recently wrote, "....there is nothing that delights me more than a riot of vivid pattern and hues..."  Emblematic of this new regime at AD is a quote in the August AD by Swiss-born, Paris-based designer Mattia Bonetti, “If people who can afford incredible decors keep commissioning bland minimalist interiors—which, I admit, are much easier to sell—it’s the end of decoration.” Fasten your seat belts AD readers!

Exiled to Paris: Windsors Devise Regal Style with Needlepoint Rugs

Posted by Abid Ilahi on Feb 22, 2014 7:15:00 PM

Decades before the press became enamored by Princess Diana, there was a romantic British royal couple who had an even more engaging story. It starts with the dashingly handsome Edward VIII, king of the world's most powerful empire. Edward decided to marry Wallis Simpson, a bewitching American divorcée, but British law did not permit such a marriage. Against determined opposition from the Royal Family and the British government, Edward held steadfast and abdicated from the throne of England in a dramatic radio address on December 11, 1936. The young King spoke to a stunned world “I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as King as I would wish to do, without the help and support of the woman I love.” The couple married in France six months later and lived in exile for the rest of their lives, mostly in Paris but also in the Bahamas and New York. With Stephane Boudin of Maison Jansen as adviser and guide, the Duchess set about designing a regal home that mixed French antiques with English needlepoint rugs to remind the Duke of the English palaces he had left behind. She scoured the antique shops of Paris and hired the finest artisans to create the rooms featured below.

Valentino Displays Love for Chinoiserie and Needlepoint Rugs

Posted by Abid Ilahi on Nov 12, 2013 8:00:00 AM

Valentino Garavani has been called the maestro of Italian couture and the epitome of Italian high fashion. So I was surprised to learn that the decorative style he admires most is not Italian but 18th century Chinese. Valentino told Architectural Digest, “When I was in Beijing for the first time, in 1993, I saw a collection of old Chinese costumes, and it was one of the great emotional moments of my life.” Valentino's passion for Chinoiserie is so strong, he has re-decorated his grand 17th century château outside Paris in Chinoiserie style anchored by an exuberant needlepoint rug that perfectly complements his collection of English, Dutch, and Italian Chinoiserie objects.

Needlepoint Rugs Bring Chic Look to Neoclassical Home

Posted by Abid Ilahi on Oct 14, 2013 5:18:00 PM

AD 100 interior decorator Miles Redd once said “Juxtaposition: high/ low; shiny/matte; refined/crude; grand/humble; modern/ancient. It is the essence of chic.”  Designer Friederike Kemp Biggs recently followed this approach in renovating his New York penthouse. Biggs paired such stylistic opposites as neoclassical architecture and floral English needlepoint rugs so beautifully, his rooms got featured in Architectural Digest. We can be excused for fearing that mixing objects of very different styles will create a confusing hodgepodge. So it is an eye opener to see how chic Biggs home looks with its mix of floral needlepoint rugs and neoclassical architecture.

Needlepoint Rugs Make it Easy to Mix Antique with Modern

Posted by Caroline Bell on Sep 1, 2013 9:52:00 AM

Is your vision of needlepoint rugs confined to subtly colored rugs with tame floral motifs? If so, prepare to get your mind blown away with the beauty of bold and colorful needlepoint rugs. Because they are flat-woven and have intricate patterns, needlepoint rugs are often thought of as being high on aesthetic and low on function, especially when compared to other types of rugs. What you may be surprised to learn is that you can find good quality needlepoint rugs in bold, vibrant colors that are also highly durable and suited for trafficked rooms. You may have a needlepoint rug that you're dying to use, but you're afraid. Use it. Billy Baldwin said, "Stick to the things you really love. An honest room is always up to date."
