How to Pick the Best Rugs for Adjacent and Adjoining Rooms

Posted by Abid Ilahi on May 18, 2017 5:05:00 PM

Imagine you are leading guests on a tour of your home. As you walk from one room to the next do you see a consistent design aesthetic or do some rooms jump out because they have not yet been updated? If after this tour you decide to freshen the neglected rooms, where would you start? Many decorators start with the rug as it makes it easier to find complementary fabrics, paint colors and accessories. However, choosing a rug raises such questions as- how well matched do rugs in adjoining rooms have to be? Should you even try to match area rugs in adjoining rooms or should they all be different? Are there rules for how to coordinate different area rugs? how do you put oriental rugs in adjoining rooms? how to pick complementing designer rugs for one room? and how to have area rugs in adjoining living and dining rooms? I asked Jackie Ostrander, a highly sought after rug consultant to interior designers in Greenwich, Connecticut, Palm Beach and Naples, Florida to help me answer these questions.

How Jane Fonda Enriched Home by Mixing Oriental Rugs with Modern Rugs

Posted by Abid Ilahi on Jul 22, 2014 6:00:00 AM

Recently a homeowner fell in love with a modern floral rug but was concerned it would not work with the traditional Oriental rugs she already had in the adjoining rooms. This worry arises from a common misconception that everything in a home should match, or at the very least be of the same style. We will learn why leading interior designers advise against "matchy matchy" decorating. To bring their advice home we will look at Jane Fonda's newly built northern New Mexico ranch home, recently featured in Architectural Digest, where Fonda deliberately juxtaposed objects that many people think do not belong together. Fonda chose this approach because she wanted the newly built home to look more sophisticated and historical. Her decorating was so effective that “When Robert Redford came to visit he thought the house was at least a hundred years old,” Fonda told Architectural Digest. Pictures of the rooms are accompanied by quotes from leading decorators explaining why this decorating approach works far better than the approach of matching every object.

How to Transform a French Château with Oriental Rugs: 28 Photos

Posted by Abid Ilahi on May 25, 2014 9:05:00 AM

AD100 interior designer Timothy Corrigan bought a neoclassical Loire Valley château from the French government in 2005 and after years of painstaking effort has transformed it into a home that is not only stylishly aristocratic but also surprisingly warm and livable. “It would have been very easy to design the room in true 18th-century style, with little spindly gold chairs and not a lot of places to sit,” Corrigan told Architectural Digest. Instead Corrigan used oriental rugs and comfortable furniture to create intimate spaces throughout the château. Corrigans rooms show us how to create warm and livable environments in any size home regardless of its style or setting.
