My picks for the five best rooms with designer rugs in Veranda's November 2016 issue include Ann and Gordon Getty's Chinoiserie themed dining room and their Russian Ballet inspired music room in their Pacific Palisades, San Francisco mansion. I was exhilarated by Richard Hallberg's fresh take on a mountain retreat in Aspen and Anthony Baratta's Utah very different view of a ski lodge which he infused with bold quilt and plaid patterns. Finally we remember Atlanta Garden legend Ryan Gainey and his take on Napoleonic style. I hope you enjoy the magnificent variety.
1. Pacific Heights, San Francisco
Ann and Gordon Getty's spectacular 1913 Italian Renaissance style house in San Francisco's Pacific Heights is ready for the couple's famous Holiday parties. In the dining room an Aubusson rug with a geometric field and an ornate blue and red border adds pizazz to the room's Chinoiserie decor. An inlaid Regency table, Louis XV bergère and dining chairs covered in Veronese fabric add calm. A Louis XIV Boulle marquetry cabinet and 18th-century wall panels complete the romantic atmosphere.
2. Ann and Gordon Getty's Music Room
The Getty's Russian themed music room is a favorite place for holding recitals. The Russian theme is grounded by a 19th-century Russian Bessarabian rug that once belonged to the Scottish Duke of Hamilton. Gold and red accents in the rug help pull together a gilded George II console, a red and gold silk upholstered 18th-century English armchair and an oil by Canaletto.
2a. Inspired by The Russian Ballet
Ann and Gordon Getty's music room's patchwork curtains were made from fabrics that once decorated the Paris apartment of ballet legend Rudolf Nureyev. The sofa was inspired by a double sided sofa also in Nureyev's home.
The Kirov J Oriental Rug 8104J is based on an original Asmara painting by Elizabeth Moisan after studying textiles with Russian, Jacobean and Spanish Renaissance influences. The java brown ground is covered by vines and stylized flowers in shades of red, gold and green. It is also available as a Needlepoint Rug.
4. Aspen Ski Lodge
A shaggy white rug compliments massive redwood beams, a black vintage coffee table and beige and cream upholstery in the living room of an Aspen ski retreat designed by Richard Hallberg.
4. Utah Retreat
A geometric rug inspired by quilts pulls together a riot of colorful patterns in the living room of a ski lodge in Utah designed by Anthony Baratta. Warm reds in the rug and chairs add contrast to the panoramic views of snow capped mountains.
4a. Utah Retreat
The quilt and plaid theme continues to the fireplace sitting area.
5. An Atlanta Garden Legend's Bedroom
Napoleonic era design lends an air of regal masculinity to the bedroom of Atlanta garden design legend Ryan Gainey. A cream, gold and rose Aubusson rug complements an Empire bed, dresser and desk. A custom bed cover and an antique Klismos chair add softness.
