The twelve interiors in today’s post show how Oscar winners brighten their homes with a mix of rustic and sophisticated elements unified by well chosen decorative rugs.
2014 Academy Awards host Ellen DeGeneres wanted her Beverly Hills, California, living room to feel light, airy, rustic, modern, traditional and sophisticated all at the same time. This has been achieved by using large expanses of white and juxtaposing highly contrasting styles and textures such as the southwestern fireplace with the Louis XVI bergères and gold oriental rug and modern art with antique textiles.

Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher brought the outdoors into their modern Beverly Hills, California home and at the same time created a cozy intimacy. This is done with window walls that open up spectacular garden views. Warmth is created by a gold rug, gold and red pillows and the honey colored wood paneling.
“Helen tends to go for more rococo stuff,” says husband Taylor Hackford of his Oscar winning wife Helen Mirren. The is living and dining space in their home in the French Quarter of New Orleans has combines classical English Regency style with warm golds, reds and creams all pulled together by cream and red oriental rugs.
Will and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Calabasas, California living room opens to spectacular garden and mountain views. Designer Judith Lance and architect Stephen Samuelson created a sophisticated mix of tribal and modern elements with two seating areas one anchored by a silver grey contemporary rug and the other by a brown and silver contemporary rug.

Diane Keaton is an avid collector of California art. Her mission style living room designed by Stephen Shadley has white walls, dark wood ceiling beams, brick accents and art by Maynard Dixon and William Ritschel. The Monterey daybed and blue pots from the teens and 1920s are anchored by a brown contemporary rug with a Navajo inspired pattern.
Ali Wentworth and George Stephanopoulos’s Manhattan living room designed by Michael S. Smith is comfortable, colorful and elegant. An ornate gilded Regency mirror contrasts with the straight lines of the classical ceiling beams and the modernist coffee table. The apricot silk covered antique Swedish settee and red Kilim throw add pops of color and a time worn antique rug with blue and ivory pulls the entire composition together.

Will Ferrell and Swedish born actress (and art auctioneer) wife Viveca Paulin-Ferrell’s New York apartment was designed by Shawn Henderson. The interplay between curved and rectangular shapes in tonal greys, black and white is enriched by a mix of textures- iron, steel, weathered wood, leather, glass and plaster. Art by Roy Lichtenstein, Mario Dal Fabbro and Sol LeWitt is anchored by a simple white contemporary rug with a grey silk border.
The living room of Kelsey Grammer’s Bel Air house designed by Kenneth Alpert and Andrew Petronio of KA Design Group has beautiful garden views, dark beamed cathedral ceiling and several comfortable seating areas in beige and gold all pulled together by one large beige and silver oriental rug with a tonal damask pattern.
