The New York Times called Louise de Vilmorin's Salon Bleu, "one of the high-water marks of 20th-century decoration." The most copied aspect of this room is the large amounts of Brunschwig & Fils blue Verrieres fabric which designer Henri Samuel used on all the chairs, sofa and curtains. The Peak of Chic blog considers Verrieres "one of the design world's great prints," and Nadine, Baroness de Rothschild thought this fabric made "all the women look lovelier because it radiates a peaceful and serene atmosphere." How to Decorate with Manuel Canovas Toile Fabric and Green Rugs

Image for How to Decorate with Manuel Canovas Toile Fabric and Green Rugs

If you are willing to think outside the box, you can have a lot of fun looking for a green rug to go with Manuel Canovas Spring 2013 fabric introduction Jouvence, a Toile De Jouy depicting architectural ruins of classical Rome and Greece in lime yellow, green and white. Since Toile De Jouy has such an interesting history, I looked for a green rug with a similar historical pedigree. What is more historical than a green rug in a Greek key pattern specially if it has yellow, green and white that complement the fabric. If the pattern of the toile had not been classical architecture, a Greek key rug would not have worked. At the same time if the colors of the Greek key had not resonated with the daring colors of Manuel Canovas, that would not have worked either. Read More

How to Decorate with Scalamandre 2013 Fabrics and Aubusson Rugs

When searching for the perfect Aubusson rug to pair with a historical Scalamandre fabric such as the beautiful Wynard Paisley from Scalamandre's Spring 2013 Kathryn M. Ireland Collection, it is fun to see if the history of the fabric can provide inspiration and point to the type of Aubusson rug that would look best with the fabric. But a historical relationship is not a sufficient reason to pair a fabric with a rug. The pairing of the Aubusson rug and fabric should also be aesthetically pleasing. If you can achieve both historical and aesthetic complementarity, the room will not only be pleasing to look at, but also look informed and sophisticated. Kathryn Ireland found the Wynward Paisley in its original red coloration in the archives of the 84 year old Scalamandre mill in Long Island, New York. The paisley pattern goes back hundreds of years back to Cashmere Shawls that were woven by hand in Kashmir, India.  What comes to mind is a Palempore Aubusson rug inspired by 19th century Indian fabrics that were popular in the England of Downton Abbey.    Read More

Brunschwig & Fils, Le Touches fabric was a favorite of Billy Baldwin, Geoffrey Beene and Tiffany's legendary Director, Van Day Truex. In today's post we will show how to pair blue, pink and green fabrics with small scale animal print patterns with blue, pink and green rugs using Les Touches as an example. We will learn the three criteria for pairing rugs and fabrics so they resonate as well as balance each other in color as well as pattern. For example Les Touches animal print motifs form an S shape that resonates particularly well with large scale curving vines in a floral rug. At the same time the open ground between the large scale vines provides a counterpoint to the dense animal print pattern of Les Touches. Read More

How to Decorate with Pierre Frey Spring 2013 Fabrics and Blue Rugs

Image for How to Decorate with Pierre Frey Spring 2013 Fabrics and Blue Rugs

The most beautiful of Pierre Frey's Spring 2013 fabrics are the hand crafted, indigo dyed Collection Shibao. Blue rugs that go best with these fabrics are made of handspun wool yarn which produces natural variations in color and texture. Avoid blue rugs with overly shiny, smooth and uniform textures and colors, as they will look incompatible with the handcrafted textures of the Shibao fabrics. The pattern of the blue rug should be chosen with care so it enhances the organic and geometric patterns of Pierre Frey's blue fabrics. Today we look at a selection of Pierre Frey's new fabrics and gain an appreciation of their ethnic origins. This will help us in selecting the most suitable blue rugs for decorating. Read More

How to Pair Green Rugs with Colefax and Fowler’s Spring 2013 Fabrics

If you are trying to find a great green rug to pair with the Spring 2013 Fabrics from Colefax and Fowler, Jane Churchill, Larsen and Manuel Canovas, it is important you pay attention to two important factors, first the shades of green in the green rug and second, the pattern of the green rug. Today we will look at lime green colorations of Callan Stripe, Brooke, Gilpin Stripe, Earthy and Jules. Taking color first, we note that lime green has a lot of yellow in it so it should be balanced with a blue-green. A fashionable choice would be Pantone's Emerald 17-5641, the color of the year for 2013. However, be careful to avoid green rugs with large expanses of emerald green as they could make a room feel cold. Emerald as an accent color is fine, and it is even better if it is accompanied by a warm color such as yellow. Read More

Mary McDonald's new Chinois Palais fabric for Schumacher is being advertised in a room which has a grey and white geometric rug. While this room looks eye catching, it feels cold. This is because grey hs been used in a large area of the geometric rug. If grey had been used in smaller amounts such as in pillows, it would have created an attractive pop, without making the room feel cold. Read More
