Oushak rugs are available in many colors, but they are most admired for the light, watercolor nature of the hues. Oushak rugs have a timeless look that is a blending of antiquity and modern trendiness. Those pale tones can be utilized in a number of unique ways.
Steve Jobs, Apple’s creator, said, “Design is not just what it looks like. Design is how it works.” While he was referring to technology, the same is true of design. The beautiful tints and shades of an Oushak rug can work in a number of ways to accompany your design.
1. Make a Statement by Using a Color from Oushak Rug Throughout Room
The vibrant but delicate color of an Oushak rug can be the signature color of your room. Interior design by Miles Redd.
In the living room created by AD100 designer Miles Redd—and author of The Big Book of Chic—the vibrant blue of the Oushak rug sets the tone for the entire room. That same brilliant shade of blue is repeated in the chairs and pillows, pulling the room together as a single element. There are many other colors and patterns used in the room, but that glorious blue is what really stands out.
While the colors in most Oushak rugs are not dark or intense, they are beautifully vibrant. The eye-catching color of some Oushak rugs can be used as the signature color in a room. This signature color can be used in lighter and darker shades in other elements in the room, just as Miles Redd did.
1. Create a Pleasing Contrast with Oushak Rugs

In the above home office area designed by Elle Decor A-list designer Alex Papachristidis, the Oushak rug has an ornate design in understated tones, and it allows for the use of much darker colors for everything higher than the floor. The dark wood paneling on the wall, the tones of blue fabric on the chairs and the masculine window treatments are kept from overwhelming the room because the light colors of the Oushak rug create a contrast and reflect light that streams in from the window.
While there are other light colored elements in the room, such as the statue and the lamps, it is the pale Oushak rug that keeps the room look balanced and allows everything to work together beautifully.
If your furnishings are dark, then select a pale colored Oushak rug to add contrast and make the room look brighter. The pale colored Oushak rug will reflect light and spread it in the room. You can also take the opposite approach and use light colored furnishings and balance them with a dark colored Oushak rug. In this way the Oushak rug will ground the light colored furnishings and provide a pleasing contrast.
3. Create a Light Filled Room with Pale Oushak Rugs
Light colored Oushak rugs can help you create clean, open spaces with other light colored furniture and décor. Interior design by Jauregui Architects.
The light shades in the Oushak rug of the living room created by Jauregui Architects are reflected all throughout the room. The whites, grays and lightest tans of the Oushak rug are found in the stone wall, the furniture and even the cabinetry in the next “room” of the open floor plan. The effect is trendy and modern. The vibrant blue pieces create pop. The brown wood floor and ceiling add warmth and contrast.
The pale tones of an Oushak rug work in ways that darker rugs can’t. Oushak rugs can make a quiet statement with a pop of delicate color. In rooms with dark furnishings pale Oushak rugs bring in light so the dark décor doesn’t overpower the room; The third way is to use light colored Oushak rugs to design light filled, chic, modern rooms that are a welcome change from the usual white-on-white rooms.
