Grey winter skies can affect our mood and even our wellbeing. A well tried antidote is to bring warm sunny colors into a favorite room. Take inspiration from a cheerful painting or a colorful rug such as the Adria needlepoint rug with its red, orange, yellow, periwinkle blue, white and greens inspired by Van Gogh landscapes. 4 Tips for decorating with sunny colors inspired by a colorful rug
1. Start with a colorful rug that makes you feel happy
Sunny colors are uplifting. The Adria needlepoint rug’s bright, vibrant hues are inspired by the sunny Provencal landscapes of Vincent Van Gogh. These lively colors will make a room feel cheerful even on the darkest winter day.
2. Make decorating easy by choosing a rug with a complex color palette.
Avoid rugs that have only a few colors as this will limit the number of fabrics and accessories that you can use with it. The Adria needlepoint rug has many shades of red, orange, blue, yellow and green which makes it easy to pick fabrics, wall colors and accessories that work with the rug. It will also be easy to freshen up the look in the future. All you will have to do is change one or two of the fabrics and paint the walls a different color.
3. Select fabrics that set a contrasting mood to the colorful rug.
If you choose a colorful rug with an exuberant pattern such as the Adria needlepoint rug, then make sure to pair it with fabrics that do not compete with the rug. To ground the room, and create contrast with the colorful pattern of the rug, I selected solid fabrics, rather than ones with patterns similar to the colorful rug. This way the statement rug can remain the focal point, making this living room a welcoming retreat.
4. Mix different Styles of furniture and fabrics to create a fun and relaxed ambience
I chose a tailored 1950’s Danish ochre yellow sofa, a cozy 1930’s French vintage leather club chair, an elegant Louis XVI style chair covered in a rich emerald velvet, a Louis XVI style coffee table and a Tiffany Landscape floor lamp. While the furniture pieces have classic lines, I added variety and interest by selecting fabrics that are a fun assortment of rustic, chic and modern textures. The airy lines of the sofa and the mix of fabrics build on the cheerful feeling of the needlepoint rug making this room feel warm and inviting all year round.
“Wheat field with Cypresses” by Vincent Van Gogh, 1889. This is among two Van Gogh landscape paintings that inspired the sunny colors of the Adria needlepoint rug. “I have a canvas of cypresses with some ears of wheat, some poppies, a blue sky like a piece of Scotch plaid; the former painted with a thick impasto . . . and the wheat field in the sun, which represents the extreme heat, very thick too.” wrote Van Gogh to his brother. According to the Metropolitan Museum, New York, Van Gogh regarded this sun-drenched landscape as one of his “best” summer canvases. Image courtesy Metmuseum.
