Aubusson rugs feature designs originally created by French artists. These tapesty weave rugs first began to be made in the 16th century in the village of Aubusson on the banks of the Creuse river whose water is thought to have special qualities for dyeing brilliant colors. The classical beauty of Aubusson rugs has withstood the test of time. Top interior designers around the world use Aubusson rugs to bring classical elegance to interiors. The classical patterns and artistic color palettes of these rugs can energize a room and pull together furniture and objects of different styles. Since the colors of Aubusson rugs are composed by fine artists, they provide a valuable source of inspiration for choosing the color palette for the rest of the room. The four interiors in today’s post are all by top designers and show the different ways you can decorate with Aubusson rugs.
Derive Color Palette from Aubusson Rug
An Aubusson rugs with a pattern of large tropical leaves in many shades of green from yellow-green to blue-green provide inspiration for the colors of the wall and upholstery fabric in this Palm Beach, Florida library designed by Scott Snyder. Image courtesy of Scott Snyder.
The amount of flow in this library is achieved by a flawless combination of dramatic versus delicate coloration. The pale lime color of the sofas feed softly from the Aubusson rug below, creating a gentle ease into the upper portion of the room. The striking colors of the walls and underwater scenery transfers energy back to the Aubusson rug to create a harmonious feeling. Dark woods in the walls and furniture balance the cool greens with warm tones and also provide a pleasing contrast.
Create Drama by Heightening Warm Contrast with Aubusson Rug
Interior designer Inson Wood chose a Chinese red for the walls to create a vivid contrast with the beige Aubusson rug, cream sofas and black and white geometric floor. Image courtesy Inson Dubois Wood.
The soft coral accent colors of the beige Aubusson rug provide a connection to the red walls and the red and white pillows, but the drama in this room is created by dramatic contrasts such as the contrast between the pale colors of the Aubusson rug and the energetic reds of the walls and drapery. Another contrast is between the classical pattern of the Aubusson rug and modern abstract painting. The large scale black and white geometric pattern on the floor provides another unexpected contrast which is continued in the black fireplace and chandelier.
Heighten Drama with Cool Contrasts with Aubusson Rug
Hollywood actor turned celebrity interior designer, William Haines, chose a striking yellow green walls to create a dramatic contrast with the cream and pale greys of the Aubusson rug in this stunning and famous salon in Winfield House, the U.S. Ambassador’s London residence. Haines created a beautiful contrast between the white, pale grey and cream of the Aubusson rug and the sofas and chairs and the warm wood tones of the floor and furnture and then another contrast with the yellow-green of the walls and ceiling molding. The white ceiling and crystal chandelier contrast crisply with the green walls and they also resonate with the white Aubusson rug. The soft grey decorative border of the Aubusson rug flows smoothly underneath the furniture and holds the lower level of the room together. The gilded mirror frame and gold dorr trims add warmth and another contrast to the cool green colors. Pink floral arrangements , create pop.
Create Drama with Black and Gold Aubusson Rug
Gold acanthus scrolls on a black Aubusson rug bring energy and drama to this sophisticated dining room. Interior design and Photo by Koch Studio.
In this room, attention is focused softly on the beige seating encircling a glass table. The green, pale blue, gold and beige tones of the scenic wallpaper and the gold on black of the LaSarre Aubusson rug under a glass dining table create a contrast that is pleasing and dramatic at the same. White trim adds crispness to and also frames the large bay window which fill the room with softly dispersed light. Although the rug and scenic wall covering capture our attention they also allow us to enjoy the beauty of the glass dining table and elegant chairs.
