Art Deco Rugs in Thierry Despont’s Fabulous Interiors

If you are searching for ideas on how to decorate with Art Deco rugs, you should look at the Art Deco interiors of Thierry Despont the multifaceted French architect, inter designer and artist whose dazzling 45 Park Lane Hotel in London was featured earlier this week in How to Decorate with Art Deco Rugs- 12 Celebrated Interiors.

Thierry Despont’s client list includes taste makers such as Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Harry Winston and Chopard as well as institutions such as the Getty Museum, The Statue of Liberty and the Kennedy Center in Washington plus legendary Art Deco hotels such as London’s Claridges, The Dorchester and 45 Park Lane as well as New York’s Carlyle Hotel, Hôtel de Crillon Paris and Principe di Savoia in Milan. Despont is also known for designing modern day Xanadus for the country’s wealthiest homesteaders such as Bill Gates, Millard Drexler (The Gap and J.Crew Group) and Leslie H. Wexner (The Limited, Victoria’s Secret, Pink and Abercrombie & Fitch).

Despont’s private clients rarely allow their homes to be published, so I have had to resort to including Despont’s commercial interiors so you get a sense of his distinctive decorating style with Art Deco Rugs.

For the library of a New York Penthouse, Thierry Despont designed an Art Deco rug with long rectangular blocks set with diamond patterns in gold, brown and beige on a beige ground. The rounded forms of the art deco armchair, side table and ceiling lamp are balanced by the square shapes in the rug, the table and the photographs. Image courtesy despont.com.

For “Jeweler to the Stars” Harry Winston’s Beverly Hills store, Despont designed a burgundy red and gold Art Deco rug with a field design of stripes and a border reminiscent of Meso-American architecture. The desk, chair, lamps and wall paneling echo romatic themes in an Art Deco aesthetic.  Image courtesy despont.com.

In New York’s Chatwal hotel an Art Deco rug with a handsome white on dark brown geometric pattern ties the seating and dining areas. The sofa, coffee table, light fixtures and dining table convey the glamor of Art Deco and pay homage to American automobile design of the 1930’s and 40’s. Image courtesy Chatwal Hotel.

“America has been influenced by Art Deco but really this is a French tradition” Despont told Sleeper Magazine, “when you look at the Chrysler, this is a building inspired by car design, so I looked to the glorious Machine Age in America [1918-41] and industrial designers of the time who could turn their hands to anything.”

In the same Upper East Side apartment a grey and tan Art Deco rug portrays machine age themes within an oval frame that resonates with the shape of the oval Art Deco table and the large oval light fixture reminiscent of automobile interior lighting. The rocking chairs with large wheel shaped rockers make more references to the machine age. Image courtesy despont.com.

A taupe, grey and white Art Deco rug with a design reflecting ancient Egyptian decorative motifs adorns the bar at The Dorchester hotel in London.
