Aubusson rugs ancient patterns have a timeless appeal. It might surprise you to learn that these rugs are as much at home in a rustic country interior as in a glamorous English country house, a French château or an Italian villa. Aubusson rugs were originally created in the 18th century for the French nobility. The patterns of these rugs are a combination of architectural notifs from classical Greece and Rome and French floral motifs. Aubusson rugs have a flat-woven texture which gives them a clean, almost contemporary look. The seven chic rooms in today’s post illustrate several different ways of decorating with Aubusson rugs.
Juxtapose a Rustic Cathedral Ceiling with an Aubusson Rug
This warm and chic farmhouse-style living room by Nelson Barnum Interiors combines vaulted wood ceiling, a comfortable sofa with classic, formal armchairs and coffee table and a beautiful Aubusson rug. The warm beige tones of the rug work with the earthy shades in the room and complement the light greens incorporated in the upholstery, curtains and accent pillows. A warm fireplace dominates one end of the room, providing an inviting atmosphere. Photo by Mark Lohman.

Create a Warm and Inviting Atmosphere by Mixing Rustic and Refined Textures
This gorgeous, cheerful living room by Nancy Morton has a warm country feel thanks to the rustic wood-plank ceilings and walls. The red and beige Aubusson rug provides a rich contrast to the room’s neutral palette, complementing the warmer wood tones in the room and providing interesting visual contrast to the contemporary, striped curtains and resonating with the white ceiling molding. Evoke an Opulent French Country Style
The gold, aqua and cream Giselle 1995GD Needlepoint rug is very versatile and works beautifully in this ornate French country style living room. Design a Romantic Country Living Room
This amazing, cream living room has a colonial feel with weathered antiques and rough-hewn wood. The low white-plank ceiling and elaborate candle chandelier, paired with arched exterior doorways, give the feeling of classic American houses like Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello or George Washington’s Mount Vernon. The rustic coffee table is placed before a formal settee and provides dramatic contrast with the more elaborate period accents in the room. A gold Aubusson rug with shades of cream creates a lush, elegant feel and the white fabrics on the sofa add to the airy and well lighted look. The key to creating this look is to use white and cream fabrics and walls and wood furniture that has a weathered and rustic look. Photo courtesy of Gypsy Purple Home.
If you’re creating a space with a country feel, try an Aubusson rug to lend a sense of regal warmth and charm. These rugs add lush beauty, pattern and an artistic color palette to a room.
