Cristobal Balenciaga founded Balenciaga in Paris in 1951 and taught fashion legends Oscar de la Renta, André Courrèges, Emanuel Ungaro, Mila Schön and Hubert de Givenchy. Christian Dior proclaimed him “The master of us all.” Balenciaga had impeccable taste in Needlepoint rugs and Bessarabian rugs.
The Barcelona needlepoint rug is a copy of a rug in Balenciaga’s private collection and has the classic and timeless vibe of the 1950’s and 1960’s. Floral prints are number one in Spring 2012 Women’s Fashion Shows. We paired mid-century furniture with Balenciaga’s floral needlepoint rug creating a high style modern living room.
For this week’s room scheme I have chosen Balenciaga’s Barcelona needlepoint rug as my jumping off point. The warm golds and terracotta reds of the Barcelona needlepoint rug are what I was drawn to most. They had an approachable elegance to them so I thought I would design a room that had the same overall feel.
To start I selected a sofa, upholstered in a rich red fabric, to anchor the room. It not only picks up some of the terracotta in the rug, its darker hue is practical and guests will feel at ease with a drink or something to eat. This high fashion living room is for “living” and not just for looking.
The next two selections were the matching lounge chairs. Their deep cushions are very inviting, yet tailored. The cream upholstery makes the pieces look clean and sophisticated.
The large leather ottoman is, perhaps, my favorite find. Beautifully tufted with gorgeous carved wood legs, this piece functions as a spectacular “coffee table”. Because it lacks the hardness of more traditional wood or metal tables, it keeps the space inviting for visitors of all ages, but it never lacks refinement.
Finally, I used gold accessories to accent this fashionable living room. The lamp, pillows and tray add a touch of glamor to the space without making it feel too formal.
