Architectural Digest has a dominant share of the 15 best rooms with decorative rugs in May 2014. Another remarkable thing is how many of the rooms are over sized and how many feature custom silk rugs. These interiors may be telling us something about the divergence between the upper end and the rest of the market.
The drawing room of an apartment inside a three hundred year old English manor called Burley on the Hill decorated by Mark Gillette in the neoclassical style of 18th-century Scottish architect Robert Adam. The Adam’s style ceiling was originally in cream and gold and Gillette had it painted pink and blue to evoke both Adams and Wedgewood. The sofas and lamps continue the pink and blue color scheme and a neoclassical Aubusson rug in an Adams pattern anchors the entire room.

A contemporary textured cream custom rug anchors the blue and yellow color scheme of the living room in Steve Wynn’s Manhattan retreat. “The Wynns are happiest on a boat in the Mediterranean,” designer Roger Thomas told Architectural Digest, “so I suggested sea-blue with a sunny yellow.” The large de Kooning on the blue wall faces an important Lichtenstein on the other.

Designer Lilly Bunn created a lively and colorful Manhattan apartment for a client in her 20’s. Bunn chose neutral creams, whites and greys for the major pieces- the furniture and textured wool rug and confined the vibrant colors to the accessories- pillows and seat cushions. This makes the room extremely flexible and easy to freshen-up- all you would have to do is change the pillows, seat cushions and the wall color!
