The legendary interior designer Albert Hadley was a master at decorating with Aubusson rugs. Hadley believed a designer’s greatest responsibility was to design rooms that fit the client’s personal lifestyle and also feel comfortable and have great flair.
Hadley had a famous saying, “The essence of interior design will always be about people and how they live. It is about the realities of what makes for an attractive, civilized, meaningful environment, not about fashion or what’s in or what’s out. This is not an easy job.”
Aubusson rugs with their varied designs and use of color are perfect for designing chic and stylish rooms that fit your personal life style. The the interiors in today’s blog post vividly illustrate this principle.
Despite the common misconception, Aubusson rugs should not be thought of as being limited to use in traditional European style rooms. Today’s interiors with Aubusson rugs encourage you to create your own personal style with Aubusson rugs and design rooms that are comfortable and meaningful to the way you like to live. This is not about copying a static room in a fashion magazine.
Delicate elegance with a softly colored Aubusson rug in cream, red and gold. The Aubusson rug anchors a lavender-pink contemporary day bed and sofa. By using the same lavender and pink silk damask for the walls and drapes this living room feels traditional, contemporary and romantic at the same time. The softly colored Aubusson rug with lyrical floral scrolls provides an elegant foundation for the lush pinks and lavenders in the room. This room has a more European look in that the colors in the Aubusson rugs are not exact matches of the colors of the damask wallcovering and drapery. The whole design scheme works because pinks and lavender in different shades are used throughout the room. The use of pink does not overwhelm us because the Aubusson rug does not contain the exact of shade of pink found in the fabrics. Instead the Aubusson rug has deep rose and red accents. Also the blue door and fresh cut flowers help to freshen the room and the gold mirror frame adds warmth and balances the cool pinks and lavenders.

This library in the Paris home of the owners of the fashion company Hermes is a great example of “The Collected, Not Decorated” European decorating style. Notice how the yellow ochre of the Aubusson rug somewhat matches the settee in the center of the room- but the crimson of the medallion on the Aubusson is not reflected anywhere else in the room. In fact, it contrasts beautifully with the fresh green walls. The color green on the walls contributes to making this room feel lived in and welcoming- whereas a perfect match of the walls to the crimson or the gold in the Aubusson rug would have made for a more serious and formal room.
It is important to underline that the designer made no attempt to coordinate the fabrics and wall colors with the Aubusson rug. Only the gold and white Directoire sofa picks up the gold in the Aubusson rug, but this happened accidently, because the sofa and its original velvet fabric are antiques. The colors of the bright green walls and the brilliant turquoise and teal of the books are not found anywhere in the Aubusson rug. The colors of the needlepoint upholstery on the 18th-century armchair are also different from the colors in the room. Despite all the many colors, the room looks stunningly beautiful and calm.

The living room in Kate Spade’s Manhattan apartment is centered on a classic Aubusson rug. In order to highlight Kate’s eclectic collection of bold modern and ethnic prints in the pillows and almost out of frame armchair- the Aubusson rug takes a subtle and sophisticated role with its French florals in warm reds and golds on a taupe background. The strong lines of the Art Deco sofa looks more beautiful because it is juxtaposed next to the romantic Aubusson rug. The soft gold and reds in the Aubusson rug provide a soft and complexly shaded counterpoint to the bold red, white and black pillows.
The interiors in todays post show that Aubusson rugs are perfect for designing rooms that fit your own personal style. We will do well to remember Albert Hadley’s advice and start our designing by understanding the life style and needs of the people who will live in the space. If we do this we will be correctly guided in our designing and our spaces will fit the life styles and aesthetic preferences of the people who will live in them. The decorating styles of the Hermes family and of Kate Spade are very different because they reflect their personalities. Each has found their own way of decorating with Aubusson rugs, in a style that reflects who they are. This illustrates how Aubusson rugs are perfect for designing rooms that fit your design and life style.
