Elle Decor’s 6 best rooms with designer rugs in March include a light filled Greenwich Village penthouse inspired by Robert Kime fabrics, a color saturated Madrid apartment where ancient and modern art sit side by side, a San Francisco art dealers apartment fashioned out of a converted warehouse by designer Stephan Jones and a landmarked Italianate townhouse in the West Village transformed into light-filled exquisiteness by Dutch designer Piet Boon.

1. Cream and Red

Sunlight streams in from an extensive bank of windows into Calhoun Sumrall’s penthouse living room in Greenwich Village, New York. A red Soumak rug layered on top of a sea grass rug complements upholstery fabrics by Robert Kime.

2. Green, Blue and Red

Manolo March, scion of one of Spain’s most prominent banking families decorated his new Madrid apartment with an explosion of color and a mix of art from ancient Egypt to the present day. In the entry a bright green designer rug anchors a 19th century Renaissance-style velvet chair, a 1950’s Maison Jansen chandelier, a 1930’s French console flanked by 18th-century Spanish armchairs and an antique Murano candelabra. A Sandra Blow painting hangs above the sofa and the facing wall has Russian Constructivist watercolors and a Fernand Leger painting.

The Como Oriental Rug 6099FG has thousands of tonal shades of fresh green and gold. The rug looks surprisingly contemporary despite the ancient pattern of mythical creatures inside repeating ovals. Variations of the Como pattern are found in ancient Persia, Renaissance Italy and Ming Dynasty China.

3. Green, Blue and Cream

 In the master bedroom of Manolo March’s apartment a blue-green rug anchors a neoclassical bench and leather armchair made by Maison Jansen for March’s ancestral home. The Louis XVI mirror is also a family heirloom.

The Morena Oriental Rug 6813GD has many shades of blue from midnight to gray-blue to ash all on a shaded background of camel , gold, tan, beige and bronze.

4. Red, Green and Yellow

In the living room of a weekend house in Katonah, New York designed by Delphine Krakoff, a cream and gray Moroccan style geometric rug anchors colorful felt covered dining chairs that play off the 1982 artwork, 120 Plaster Surrogates by Allan McCollum.

5. White, Gray and Black 

A white sofa by Future Perfect and leather swivel chairs by B&B Italia are anchored by a round gray silk custom rug in the parlor of Rachel Lee and Ara Hovnanian’s landmarked Italianate West Village townhouse which was transformed by Dutch designer Piet Boon into an exquisitely airy and light filled space. The marble mantel is original and the chandelier was designed by Boone.

6. Cream, Cement, White, Yellow and Black 

The dining area of San Francisco art dealer Francis Mill’s apartment is a showcase for his art collection. The apartment was fashioned out of a former warehouse space by designer Stephan Jones. An Italian wing chair and leather armchairs surround a travertine pedestal table in front of a yellow and black painting by Jon Schueler. The white pillar sculpture is by Richard Faralla and the steel sculpture is by Brian Wall.
