“Richly faded colors” seems like an oxymoron, and yet the phrase is one of the best ways to describe the beauty of fine Oushak rugs. Even if you’re not knowledgeable about different rug types, there’s something about Oushak rugs that makes you want them when you see them. Shades of terracotta, gold, cream, soft rust and muted ochre seem to be the name of the game with these rugs that seem to quietly whisper “history”, even if they’ve been made in the past 50 years and their colors are quite modern. These beautiful floor coverings owe their luminous qualities to the rich, fine hand spun wool that the best Oushak rugs are made of. Whether you’re looking at the more traditional star or medallion Oushak rugs, or the more modern variety with soft colors, the transformative power of Oushak rugs cannot be understated. You’d never describe them as loud or overbearing.
This rustic, mountain cabin-like room by Suzanne Kasler feels like the perfect place to curl up in style with a soft blanket and a Netflix queue filled with “Game of Thorns” episodes. 1. Design a Cozy Retreat with Gold, Coral and Green Oushak Rugs
If you’re looking to create a cozy sanctuary in a bedroom or public living space, you may want to choose Oushak rugs with muted earth tones such as gold, coral and green. Think of the colors that represent peace to you- gold, coral, soft green and ivory are great examples of colors that promote rest and relaxation. Think of the textures of the furniture and accessories so you can create a mix of soft, hard, smooth and rough textures. A great part of the interest in Suzanne Kasler’s room arises from the mix of textures.
2. Learn to Determine Quality in an Oushak Rug
Avoid Oushak rugs that have been chemicaly washed and distressed to look like antique rugs. as chemical washing reduces the durability of a rug. Heavy chemical washing makes the rug a shiny. This artificial shine should not be taken as an indication of quality.
Look for Oushak rugs that are made with fine hand spun wool and has not been chemically washed. Such rugs have a natural luster which is far more beautiful than the artificial luster created by chemical washing.
Avoid Oushak rugs in which the pile has been sheared very low to mimic an antique Oushak rug as excessively low shearing of the pile impair the durability of the rug.
Chemical washing turns all the colors of an Oushak rug yellow. An Oushak rug with yellowed colors will not work with white and clear colored fabrics.
Look for Oushak rugs that have a wide range of soft and darker shades as this will give more character to the room and also make it easy to find fabrics that work with the rug.
3. Select Approprate Fabrics and Lighting
Next think of fabrics that would look beautiful alongside the Oushak rug. Mulberry silk drapes, velvet pillows and linen-upholstered sofas are just some of the items and textures that will help you create a chic space. Thanks to the naturally lustrous wool of fine quality Oushak rugs, you’ll enjoy noticing the way your Oushak rug seems to change color as it reacts to varying amounts of daylight throughout the day. Place your lighting on dimmers in order to control the amount of light the room receives. Incorporate natural materials like stone, wood and glass as this will make the room have depth and move the eye.
4. Design Calm, Light-Filled Havens With Oushak Rugs

Peaceful interiors can also be light and airy without being too energizing. You can choose calm colors that are cool versus warm. Cool shades like exquisite blues of different shades mixed with every type of white you can imagine can create a soothing seaside-type vibe that is as relaxing as it is bewitching. Billowy organza drapes, crystal and glass and neutral-colored stone are just some of the accessories that can bring a soothing, tranquil vibe to rooms graced with Oushak rugs. If you’re able, choose a good quality Oushak rug first and use it to develop your color palette. It will be easier to select fabrics, furniture and accessories to go with a well colored Oushak rug.
The emphasis should always be on quality when working with Oushak rugs because their pedigree demands that everything they’re paired with looks like it’s on the same level. That doesn’t mean that you need to take out a second mortgage in order to furnish your space. Flea markets and estate sales are still the sites of major scores for goodies to fill up your home. Albert Hadley said, “Nothing comes cheap, though the educated eye will always spot very nice things for the least money.” Rumor is he knew a thing or two about interior design.
