1. Mix Neutrals, Colorful Fabrics and Modern Art on an Oushak Rug
Christina Murphy’s living room combines vibrant color with neutral beiges, and the creates contrast with graphic black and white patterns. The main burst of color is in the coral Oushak rug, the rosy-coral walls, and the orange and coral upholstered chairs. There is a range of orange and coral shades- the bolder shades are on the chairs and the softer shades are on the large surface area of the walls. The coral color of the Oushak rug comes in between the dark shades of the chairs and the softer color on the walls. This variation allows the color to surround a person without being too overpowering. By juxtaposing the colorful elements against neutral upholstery, white trim and white ceiling, the room feels relaxing and invites family and guests to feel at home.
2. Mix Solids and Contrasting Patterns with an Oushak Rug
All solids can be boring while too many patterns can be overwhelming. With the right combination, depth and interest are created in a room. Take another look at Christina Murphy’s living room and notice that she uses the ancient pattern of the Oushak rug to create a focal point of interest in the room. The coral Oushak rug plays off the solid orange of the chairs, and then contrast is created with bold black and white patterned pillows. The black and white abstract painting contrasts with the solid white fireplace and at the same time it connects with the black and white pillows. These bold contrasts and subtle connections through color make the entire room look interesting. Such contrasts and connections should be spaced throughout the room for the greatest impact.

3. Continue the Soft Colors of the Oushak Rug Throughout the Room
In the room above the designer created a powerful impact with very soft colors derived from the Oushak rug. The designer created the impact by carrying the soft colors from the Oushak rug throughout the room, all the way from the floor to the ceiling. In this living room, the Oushak rug has tones of ivory, beige, taupe and gold. These soft colors were made to look dramatic by giving the floor a black lacquered finish. Then the color palette of the Oushak rug was continued to the walls and windows with the use of creamy beige finish on the wood cabinets and accenting it with taupe drapery. The cream, beige and gold from the Oushak rug was carried to the white ceiling, wood beams and golden chandelier. Even though the colors of the Oushak rug are pale, they create drama because they are continued throughout the room.

4. Spread Lighter and Darker Shades of a Color Derived from the Oushak Rug
A bold color should be used sparingly and strategically in a room. However, if different shades of a color derived from an Oushak rug are placed throughout the room, the space feels unified, chic and peaceful as in the room above. In the room above the colors are spaced so well they make the eye moves all around the room. Starting with the bright orange curtain which demands attention, we then see the orange stripes on the chairs and then we notice the pale orange motifs in the Oushak rug under the table. The eye then comes above to the orange fruits and flowers on the table and it may then go to the sculpture which has an orange tint. By placing lighter and darker shades of orange and coral throughout the room, the designer has given this room a youthful and engaging energy.
As Christina Murphy says, color gives a room a feeling of youthful energy. When you start with an Oushak rug has an ancient pattern in modern colors, it becomes easy to design rooms that feel fresh, modern, youthful and engaging The colors of the Oushak rug become your guide in introducing as much color as you are comfortable with.
