How Your Fashion Sense Makes Decorating with Geometric Rugs Easy

Do you find it easy to pull together stylish outfits with the right accessories, but become overly cautious when making interior decorating decisions?

Have you wondered if your ability to dress fashionably could help you in decorating?

We feel more confident in dressing ourselves because we have had years of practice with time to experiment and respond to feedback from friends. In contrast most of us have had far fewer occasions to decorate or re-decorate. It is no wonder we would feel less confident in our ability to put together a great decorating scheme.

But what if the skills you have honed in fashion could help you in designing chic interiors?

Would it not be empowering and fun to discover that you already have the basic know how that is the key to great interior decorating?

To ease you into discovering this, I have selected outfits from the Fall and Winter 2012-2013 Fashion Runways as well as interiors with geometric rugs to show the similarities between stylish dressing and chic interior decorating.

Looking closely at how the model is dressed for Charlotte Ronson runway show, we see the following principles at work:

1. The main color and pattern is confined to just one item- the beige and white geometric knit top.

2. Drama is created by supporting the main item with neutrals- dark brown skirt, dark brown leather shoulder bag and the white tights.

3. Color is introduced by just one item- the red lipstick.

4. Subtle touches are used to tie in the main item- the two toned brown sandals subtly echo the beige and white geometric pattern of the knit top.

5. Dark and light shades are added to complete the range of shades in the main item as in the dark brown skirt and shoulder bag, medium brown sandals and white tights.

6. Interest is added by unexpected techniques such as the pin dot patterned rolled collar, pin dot patterned sleeves and a wide pin dot pattern border.

7. Textural interest is created by mixing the knit texture of the top with the smooth surface of the rich dark brown leather shoulder bag and the smooth surface of the white tights next to the suede texture of the brown sandals.

Now let us see how very similar techniques were used by interior designers Lisa Torbett and Dee Simmons in the living room below.

Lisa Torbett and Dee Simmons revealed their decorating approach in the blog post Needlepoint Rugs, 7 Advanced Decorating Techniques. Their advice applies to all kinds of rugs and not just to needlepoint rugs:

1. Introduce color in the room with either a bold rug or with accessories, but not with both.

2. Create drama by supporting the main colors with neutrals.

3. Use color to set the mood in the room.

4. Use subtle touches to tie in the main colors and patterns.

5. Introduce dark and light shades to complete the range of shades in the main item.

6. Add interest by using unexpected decorating techniques.

7. Use large size rugs to make the rooms feel larger and more inviting.

We can see the 7 principles at work in this living room:

1. The main color comes from the accessories- blue pillows, Majolica urn and the pictures on the walls. These blues subtly echo the colors of the ocean visible through the balcony outside the living room 2. The neutral beiges and whites in the geometric needlepoint rug, the white walls and the dark wood tones in the ceiling and furniture, all support the blue accessories. 3. Large expanses of beige and dark browns create a mood that is warm, restful and welcoming in winter and cool in summer 4. The beiges in the rug are subtly echoed in the lamp shades, the pictures and the chairs in the far end of the room. The rounded motifs in the rug are echoed by the round wrought iron chandelier 5.The light blue pillows are framed with dark blue fringe and the Majolica urn has a wide range of blues from light to dark 6. Freshness and variety is introduced by reversing where the bold colors are used in this room compared to the adjoining room (see image below) 7. The very large needlepoint rug allows all the furniture to sit on the rug, giving the room a feeling of warmth and space.

Doing this exercise as you are looking through this falls fashions. If you practice doing this you will begin to develop your own unique decorating viewpoint. This will be valuable both when working with an interior designer and when you are decorating by yourself.
