Needlepoint Rug in Romantic European Bedroom
A needlepoint rug enhances a romantic bedroom by South African designer Stephen Falcke.
Decorator Stephen Falcke’s was educated at London’s Chelsea School of Art and rumor has it that he was hired to decorate Monaco’s royal palace. Falcke used the needlepoint rug and the upholstered four-poster bed to create an air of drama, elegance and romance. The cool blue-and-white fabrics on the bed and the drapes are balanced by warm yellow and gold tones in the needlepoint rug and in the chair fabric. Image courtesy The Interior Archive.
A Royal Bedroom with Needlepoint Rug
A floral English needlepoint rug sits lends an air of majesty in the Oak Bedroom at Althorp the 500 year old ancestral home of Princess Diana.
The brown needlepoint rug with bold floral motifs has many elements that echo gently throughout the room. The room has an authentic look that is a result of the objects being collected over centuries. When decorators try to design a room that has a “Collected, not Decorated” look they are thinking of rooms such as this one in Althorp. If you are determined to find colors that connect with each other, you can find them such as the brown background of the rug which resonates with the wood furniture, or the blue accents in the rug which connect with the royal blue bedding. But you would have to admit that the powerful red of the wall covering is not to be found in the needlepoint rug, and yet the red wall is what gives the room its regal look.
Hollywood Glamor Bedroom Enriched by a Red and Cream Needlepoint Rug
A stunning bedroom designed by HBO’s “Million Dollar Decorator” Mary McDonald and featured in House Beautiful. The rooms fabrics and color scheme is based on the red and cream Bergamo needlepoint rug. Image courtesy House Beautiful.
The Bergamo needlepoint rug is reminiscent of Venetian fabrics made famous by Mario Fortuny. The rug provides the appropriate foundation for a dazzlingly glamorous bedroom in the home of a modern day Hollywood mogul. The room was featured in House Beautiful. The room’s color scheme is derived from the rug and the rugs organic pattern contrasts with the striped fabrics and geometric wallpaper. The rug’s Venetian pattern contrasts with the Chinoiserie nesting tables and bench and reminds us of treasures collected along the ancient Silk Road.

In this calm bedroom the Bergamo needlepoint rug was needed to add energy and style. The rug’s pattern compliment the floral fabrics in the room. Since this room has a considerable amount of warm golds and red the cool light blue of the headboard was needed to provide balance and contrast. The blue headboard also helps to connect the bedroom with the blue sofa in the seating area in the adjacent room.
Needlepoint Rugs Anchor a Romantic French Country Bedroom
A black needlepoint rug with a floral design creates a dramatic impact in this French Country bedroom.
Needlepoint rugs add drama as well as beauty, such as the black floral needlepoint rug used to highlight a bedroom done with French Provencal panache. The vibrant black grounds all of the red and white patterns in the room, while the flower motif creates a bond between the dark rug and the intricate designs of the bedding and walls. The leopard-print bench adds to the majestic feel.
Needlepoint rugs offer the best in terms of creating a noble air, drama and romance.
