New York interior designer Christina Murphy once said, “Punches of color keep a room feeling youthful and engaging.” A great color for creating youthful and engaging punches orange and it’s cousin coral both of which are found in an extraordinary orange Bessarabian rug that Richard Keith Langham used to evoke romantic Paris in a living room in a house in Mississippi featured in Architectural Digest.
Orange rugs in coral hues offer the best of both worlds: you get the youthfulness and playfulness of pink but without the sweetness. You get the liveliness and character of orange, but also a lot of sophistication. AD100 designer Richard Keith Langham has created a masterful living with a coral and orange Bessarabian rug that teaches us how to decorate with coral and orange rugs. Today’s blog post is entirely focused on this beautiful living room.
Langham Creates a Romantic Living Room with Coral and Orange Rug
Langham chose a rare Bessarabian rug with coral and orange tones to set the mood in this romantic art filled living room in a house in Mississippi. Image courtesy Architectural Digest.
Langham has taken the coral and orange tones from the rug and distribute them in the room in such a way that the eye moves from the floor to the table draped with a coral shawl and orange silk cloth and then up again to the orange flowers on the fireplace mantel. A red armchair and two pale pinkish- coral lamp shades on either end of the room extend the range of shades of coral and orange from dark to light. It is these subtle touches that give this room its incredible beauty, even though we might notice them right away.
Langham Engages Us by Introducing Contrasting Colors
The opposite side of the living room shows how Langham creates energy by introducing sofa and pillows in blue and aqua which are contrasting colors to coral and orange. At the same time the pink armchair introduces a complimentary color to coral. By adding both contrasting and complementary colors Langham give the room a layered look that engages us with its variety. Image courtesy Richard Keith Langham.
If you look at the coral Bessarabian rug closely, you will notice that there are aqua and blue accents in the rug. In fact this coral and orange Bessarabian rug contains the entire color palette of the room. The advantage of choosing a well designed rug such as this Bessarabian is that it makes it easy to compose the color palette for the room- all you have to do is look closely at the rug and pick two or three colors that you want to use in the rest of the room.
Langham Creates a Romantic Parisian Look
Langham gives the room a romantic Parisian look right out of Woody Allen’s movie “Midnight in Paris” by adding complimentary colors apple green and chocolate brown and ornate gold framed landscape paintings. Image courtesy Richard Keith Langham.
Evoking romantic Paris in Mississippi is not as far fetched as it may sound if you have a master of the order of Richard Keith Langham as your decorator. A closer examination of the above view of the living room shows the wonderful walls that have the appearance of age. The choice of landscape paintings within romantic gilded frames adds to the atmosphere as do the many antique lamps and lanterns. Creating a look is an art and requires talent, experience and a willingness to experiment and make mistakes. Langham clearly loves creating romantic rooms and he was fortunate to find a magnificent coral and orange Bessarabian rug that gave him a great foundation to design this masterpiece.
