Elle Decor's December 2016 issue seems to be predicting a return to richly colored traditional interiors with gorgeous Aubusson rugs as in the 17th-century Manor House in England designed by Laura Ingrams for a young Baron and his family. This trend is carried through to a magical alpine getaway in St. Moritz, Switzerland by Studio Peregalli. Contemporary design is becoming more luxurious as in the Lee Mindel designed Palm Beach oceanfront. I hope you enjoy my pick of Elle Decor's five best in December. Read More

Veranda’s 5 Best Rooms with Designer Rugs in November 2016

Image for Veranda’s 5 Best Rooms with Designer Rugs in November 2016

My picks for the five best rooms with designer rugs in Veranda's November 2016 issue include Ann and Gordon Getty's Chinoiserie themed dining room and their Russian Ballet inspired music room in their Pacific Palisades, San Francisco mansion. I was exhilarated by Richard Hallberg's fresh take on a mountain retreat in Aspen and Anthony Baratta's Utah very different view of a ski lodge which he infused with bold quilt and plaid patterns. Finally we remember Atlanta Garden legend Ryan Gainey and his take on Napoleonic style. I hope you enjoy the magnificent variety. Read More

Clients Think My New House is Two Hundred Years Old – Patrick Ahearn

Image for Clients Think My New House is Two Hundred Years Old – Patrick Ahearn

At the start of summer we interviewed Martha's Vineyard’s top award-winning architect Patrick Ahearn for our blog, Design Secrets of Martha's Vineyard's Top Architect Patrick Ahearn. We saved Patrick's most exciting design secret until now—his uncanny ability to design and build new houses that people think were built at the same time as 1790's and early 1800’s houses. Patrick's approach to architecture is not unlike that of a novelist or the writer of a script for a historical movie. Patrick spends hours writing, and then sketching what he calls a "script of implied history". Patrick researches the context of the house—the surroundings, the layout of the street, the other houses in the neighborhood and local history. From this, Patrick constructs the implied history of the house. The result is a new house that looks as if it was meticulously restored from a two hundred year old masterpiece. Join me as Patrick shares the script he wrote for his own house on Martha's Vineyard. Read More
