Steven Gambrel chose a subtle gold oriental rug to warm the contemporary lines of the furniture and the cool greys and blues in the chair, fireplace mantel and paintings in this upper Fifth Avenue dining room.
By placing a luxurious tonal gold oriental rug in this modern dining room Steven Gambrel has accompished three things- he balanced the hard lines of the furniture with the rounded motifs in the rug, he balanced the cool colors in the chair, fireplace and painting with with the warm golds of the oriental rug and finally he mixed the soft texture of the rug with the firmness of the leather chairs. By creating balance in shapes, colors and texture Steven Gambrel has made the room visually more satisfying and also more comfortable.
Decorating magazines often feature contemporary rooms with bare floors or hard edged modern rugs. Such rooms look beautful but are they comfortable to live in? Hard floors reflect sound, feel cold in winter and do not cushion feet as a soft oriental rug does. When rugs are used, they seem to have no personality and look and feel generic.
Steven Ganbrel shows us that contempory and modern design does not mean that we have to sacrifice comfort for looks. We can have both.

In the bedroom seating area Steven Gambrel created textural interest by mixing silk and wool in the contemporary oriental rug, and mixing metallics in the lamp stand and sofa frame with dark woods of the dresser and the plush green fabric on the sofa.
These Steven Gambrel quotes are from a House Beautiful interview:
Designer Quotes: “Besides beauty and spirit, my office is really focused on the way a house works..”
“..I try to provide the most functional background possible so that my clients can have the freedom to live in the moment. If the weather is suddenly cool and gray, they know they can pull up a table and eat in front of the fireplace”.
“…These clean-lined modern pieces mix well with older Belgian furniture, and I also like to use them next to things with more patina. A rustic farm table with a worn surface. Something made of old leather”.
