Frank Lloyd Wright said, “Nature is the inspiration for all ornamentation.” Wright could have been talking about green rugs and how they can be an inspiration for a room in any decorating style from clean contemporary to formal traditional. Green is the base color for nature and nature is where all great decorators learn color composition. Green is in the foliage of every tree, flower, shrub and meadow. Ski and Mountain Homes Refined by Decorative Rugs: 22 Gorgeous Rooms

Image for Ski and Mountain Homes Refined by Decorative Rugs: 22 Gorgeous Rooms

A common mistake in decorating a mountain home is to make it look too 'mountainy', says AD100 interior designer Michael S. Smith. “So many places are decked out with red plaids and antler chandeliers, it’s like walking into a Christmas sweater," Smith told Architectural Digest. Smith is critical of mountain and beach homes that feel impersonal, “A lot of vacation homes feel unlayered, as if they don’t belong to anyone in particular. My goal was to impart personality to the decor, so it feels like a living home rather than a place that gets closed up for a large part of the year.”The 22 ski and mountain home interiors featured below avoid decorating clichés, and exude a sophistication that reflects the urbanity of the owners. Designed by Smith and other great decorators such as Bill Sofield, David Easton, Markham Roberts and Stephen Sills, these homes have beautiful decorative rugs, custom made furniture, antiques and fine art that reflect the home's mountain setting as well as the history of the land. Damask Rugs Enrich 8 Interiors with History and Beauty

Image for Damask Rugs Enrich 8 Interiors with History and Beauty

Damask rugs and fabrics originated in the Middle Ages in the ancient city of Damascus and they have evolved over hundreds of years with influences from Byzantium, Persia, Italy and France. This rich artistic history gives damask a unique appeal. The pattern in a damask fabric is woven in a different weave than the background- for example if the pattern is woven in a shiny satin weave and the background in a duller weave, the contrast between the shiny pattern and duller background adds another dimension. This added dimension and texture distinguishes damask fabrics from fabrics in which the pattern is merely printed on the cloth. The best damask rugs also contain two different textures- the pattern is usually in cut pile and the background is in a loop weave. Unfortunately too many damask rugs being made today take a short-cut and are made in just one texture which is usually cut pile. These rugs do not have the dimensional interest and texture of a cut and loop damask rug. Damask rugs come in a variety of color palettes ranging from tonal neutrals to high contrast colors. The eight interiors in today’s post feature several different styles of damask rugs and offer inspiration on how to add sophistication and a sense of history to both contemporary and traditional rooms.
