The current issue of AD features a living room with bold and colorful contemporary art displayed against a 19th century Oushak rug. Just a few years ago the owner's Colonial Revival house in Greenwich, Connecticut had been decorated in luxurious traditional style by AD100 designer Mica Ertegun. But over the years the owner’s taste had changed as they amassed a collection of  “bold and provocative” contemporary art. The owners now  “…wanted a younger vibe,” for their home and called in AD100 designer, Joe Nahem and asked him to completely gut the traditional interior and build a modern setting for displaying works by John Baldessari, Jeff Koons, Gerhard Richter, and Cindy Sherman. The completed Nahem living room features edgy modern furniture and a soft beige Oushak rug. Why did Nahem not chose a contemporary rug in keeping with the contemporary furniture and art? Nahem probably felt that an Oushak rug would make the contemporary art stand out by providing contrast, while a contemporary rug create a feeling of sameness. This blog post explains why contrast is such a powerful concept in decorating as it is in other areas of life. Nahem painted the living room walls gray to highlight Andy Warhol's blue silkscreen and the 1960s Carlo Nason floor lamps. The beige Oushak rug balances the cool blues and grays in the room. The rounded shapes of the sofa and chairs are balanced by the angular tables. A black floor contrast with the beige Oushak rug. The silky texture of the Oushak rug contrasts with polished surface of the sculptural sofa and tables. T blue velvet chairs add another texture. Image courtesy Architectural Digest. Read More

The problem is that unless you infuse some classic elements such as a beautiful Oushak rug into a modern space, the space can feel cold and hard. Most of us want our interiors to look modern and also feel comfortable and cozy. But if we fill a space with modern pieces we will discover that it lacks warmth and softness. The other major problem with an open plan space is that if they are not properly designed they make us feel we if we are adrift in an airport lounge or in the midst of a passageway. When we are enamored by open plan spaces we can overlook that we also have a need for privacy and for places where we can relax with a good book or get together for an intimate family chat. Today's blog post explains the two keys for having it both ways-an open plan space that looks modern and feels intimate and cozy. These two steps will be illustrated by taking a critical look at an open plan space in the current issue of Traditional Home designed by Jamie Herzlinger Interiors. Read More
