Traditional Home’s 10 Summer Rooms with Designer Rugs

We’ve sought out 10 summer rooms from Traditional Home that showcase great designer rugs. As you’ll see, there are many styles of rugs, colors and patterns that can be successful in any summer retreat. Get inspired by these rooms for the next time you need to design that perfect summer home.

1). Nantucket Master Bedroom


In 2012, a Connecticut family purchased 1.4 acres on Nantucket and built their dream house. The master bedroom, designed by Cynthia Hayes, uses a calming palette of blues, greens and neutrals. She used a sunrise purple-blue flat weave area rug to ground the room. Photographed by John Bessler.

2). Kiawah Island Game Room


Kiawah Island, on the coast of South Carolina, has this Shingle-style summer home that wanted to be less beachy and more elegant. Tammy Connor designed the game room which features a bar, pool table and a sitting area with four green lounge chairs atop a custom plaid patterned flat weave rugPhotographed by Erica Dines.


3). Walloon Lake Side Hall


Atlanta designer Beth Webb was delighted to decorate this vacation home on Walloon Lake in northern Michigan. The main entrance and side hall both use striped espresso and beige rugs. Photographed by Emily Jenkins Followill.


4). Nantucket Screened Porch


This Nantucket house is surrounded by porches. Designer Jane Forman used an indoor-outdoor rug featuring text from a story by famed 17th-century French fabulist, Jean de La Fontaine. Photographed by John Bessler.


5). WaterSound Master Bedroom


Susan Bohlert Smith designed this summer weekend retreat in WaterSound, Florida. Here we see the owner’s Yorkie relaxing in their white walled master bedroom. Susan uses a brown area rug to protect custom wood flooring. Photographed by Colleen Duffley.

6). Nantucket Dining Room


This is designer Susan Zises Green’s Shaker-style summer home, which was built in the 1820’s on Nantucket. Her dining room boasts a custom stenciled cowhide rugPhotographed by Eric Roth.

 7). Grand Traverse Bay Living Room


This summer vacation home situated on Lake Michigan’s Grand Traverse Bay can easily accommodate eight adults and ten children! Elizabeth and Hope Schmidt designed this social area with a flat weave rug designed by Jonathan Adler. Photographed by Werner Straube.


8). Cape Cod Kids’ Bedroom


This Cape Cod kids’ room has been brightened by designer Maureen Footer with a multi-colored striped rug, which rests on aged chestnut wood flooring. Photographed by Werner Straube.

9). East Hampton Living Room


This East Hampton summer home, designed by Larry Laslo, hints at the Georgian style throughout the architecture and decor. The large white, black and neutral living room uses a tan sisal area rug, and the space overlooks 17 acres of natural preservePhotographed by Tria Giovan.
